Japanese text analyzer

Split a Japanese sentence into words and get the reading, meaning and JLPT level of each one. This is the tool you need once you can read kana but cannot tell where a word starts and ends.

How it works

  1. Paste a sentence, however long.
  2. Every word becomes clickable, coloured by JLPT level.
  3. Tap a word for its full entry, or add it to your review cards.

An example, rendered by the engine

These sentences are analysed by the same engine as the app, at site build time.

Japanese has no spaces

This is the difficulty nobody warns beginners about: 「今日はとてもいい天気ですね」 shows no visible boundary, and a wrong split gives a wrong reading. The analyzer explores every possible segmentation and keeps the most likely one, preferring long words, recognising particles and penalising splits that multiply short fragments.

Frequently asked questions

Can I analyse text copied from a website?

Yes. The browser extension even does it directly on the page, with no copy and paste.

Does it work offline?

In the Android app, entirely. On the web the dictionary is cached after the first load.
