A translation gives you the meaning and takes the language away. Readings over the kanji give you the language, and you keep the meaning. Try it: tap a word.

Tap any word in the sentence
Three steps, and the third is the one other apps forget.
Aim your camera at a page, a manga or a sign. The Japanese turns into text you can tap, even with no connection.
The reading sits over the kanji. Tap a word and its meaning opens right there, without leaving what you were reading.
Keep a word in one tap: it becomes a card, with the sentence you found it in. The app brings it back just before you would forget it.
You never have to go looking for something to read. Open the app, and something at your level is already waiting.

Speech bubbles read one by one, vertical or horizontal.
Wikipedia, news, blogs: the readings go right into the page. With Premium.

Menus, shops, stations. Point, read, understand.

A free, endless feed of real sentences at your level.

78 short stories, from your very first to the hardest, with your place kept.
Why this exists
I am learning Japanese, and like everyone I started with flashcard apps. They work, but after a while every session felt like a chore to get through, and I still could not open a book and understand it.
What I actually wanted was to read. Real texts, real manga, real videos, and to look up what I did not know without losing the thread. Nothing did that the way I wanted, so I started writing it for myself.
KanjiYome is that app. It puts the readings over the kanji, gives you the meaning in one tap, and turns the words you want to keep into review cards. You keep reading; the studying happens on the side.
My own goal is the JLPT N2, because I would like to work in Japan one day. The app is built around that goal, so it takes you all the way: read something real, understand it, and remember it.

Every day on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube: a kanji, a sign to read, a little word game. One minute, and one more thing you can read.
Yes. You can start from the kana: the app teaches them, then gives you texts and sentences at your level, from your very first to the most advanced.
Yes. Scanning, reading, the dictionary and reviews all run on the phone. Only reading Japanese websites and videos needs the network.
Not to read, scan or look words up. To study (cards, decks, reviews, quizzes) you need a free account. It keeps your progress when you change phone, and offers a 7-day Premium trial, no card needed, if you want it.
From the big open Japanese dictionary projects, the same ones most tools are built on. It lives inside the app, so it works with no connection. Every source is credited on the licences page.
Not yet. Android is where all the work goes today; I am aiming to have an iPhone version out by the end of 2026.
